Birthday Trip & Life with an 18-Month-Old

18 Months!
Miss Ella had her 18 month old check up this week, where she was happy to see her doctor and did really well with the poking and prodding. Luckily she didn't have to get any shots. Unluckily she was diagnosed with what we had thought she caught at daycare: hand, foot, and mouth disease. I am happy to say she's just about over it, and I can only hope she's building up quite the immune system.

At 18 months Ella is talking like crazy; it's almost a word a day. Last weekend she said "coffee" when I handed Chris his Starbucks. Today's was "nap". Chris and I frequently find ourselves looking at each other saying, "Did you hear that?... Yes, she just said that." She LOVES to dance and regularly requests her favorite song "Happy" by Pharrell Williams by saying and signing "happy" -- usually while on the dance floor at home (a.k.a. the hardwood entryway). She loves to be tickled, points out things she sees, stacks her big legos (favorite toy of late) and blocks, makes sure to swing, slide, and find the sand when we go to the park, goes to sleep with her Elmo and Goofy, enjoys reading books and singing songs every night before bed, and is still forever faithful to her monkey pacifier. Some of her favorite books are Curious George (she loves to say "George"), The Little Blue Truck, and several Sandra Boynton books: Moo, Baa, La La La (can pretty much recite every single animal sound), It's Pajama Time, But Not the Hippopotamus. Her current favorite foods include scrambled eggs, blueberries, "noodles" any way they come (including when Mom hides vegetables in there), cheese, cracker, cheerios/kix, bananas, whatever Mom and Dad are eating... Like most 1.5 year olds, she's finding and preferring her independence, running, climbing, and testing boundaries. She's bursting with energy, curiosity and joy, and it's exhausting! We're loving this age :)

Here's a clip from one of her first "Happy Dances". She's since added shaking her shoulders, pointing her pointer fingers up as she moves them up and down, clapping off and on, and flapping one hand at a time to her list of moves. Hysterical.

New York Trip
Chris took me to New York for my 30th birthday in late February. We were lucky to have my parents watch Ella for the long weekend and had a great couple's getaway. Our trip consisted of walking around the very cold city (it was 18 degrees when we landed), seeking out recommended sights and food, as well as going to see a show on Broadway. It was a birthday present I'll never forget!

Some of our stops that we would definitely recommend:
City Bakery-- Pretzel croissant, euro-style hot chocolate
Magnolia Bakery-- delicious cupcakes and puddings
Le Relais de Venise L'Entrecote-- parisian steak and frites (and profiteroles!)
Ground Zero
Chelsea Market-- food network building, specialty markets, and little restaurants
Pearl's Oyster Bar-- lobster rolls, clams, movie star sighting (Jean Reno)
Craft-- Tom Colicchio's restaurant, fantastic for a special occasion; they made me feel so special!
Il Mulino-- best meal we've ever had thanks to Chris's boss, Warren
Eataly-- Mario Batali's italian food and drink marketplace
