First Steps, Best Friday

Rewind to Friday...

I spent most of the late afternoon with Ella sitting on my lap in the chair in her room. She would sign and say "book" handing me one from her drawer, I'd picker her up and read it to her, and she'd pop down and get another, starting the routine all over again. I think we got through 7 in a row. I was in heaven having her so engaged in books for the first time, showing that she wanted me to read to her and pointing to the illustrations as I read for such a long time. I got so excited every time she could show me where the hippopotamus was...the frog, bear, bird, baby... It was incredible to see just how much she understands now.

After Chris got home we ate dinner, and then we were playing with her on the floor. As we sat there together she took her first steps between us. First it was 2 or 3 before flopping down on the floor, and she did that a couple of times. After a few minutes she got up to 7 steps in a row! What great luck that we got to experience that together. We'll never forget the incredible smile she flashed us (or me screaming with excitement on accident!). In true Ella fashion, we clapped and said "yay" after each set of steps.

To top it off, Ella learned how to cheers with her play teacup. We had a tea party for three, laughing every time she clinked our cups or put her cup up to her mouth and let out an "ehhhh" afterward as if she was totally refreshed. Hysterical.

It was an awesome day in the Garber household... Oh, how our Fridays have changed. And we wouldn't change it for the world.

Here's a little clip of Ella practicing with some of her first steps:

Fall Fun 2013

Fall, like summer, has been moving by quickly. Between work/Chris traveling, school, illness (everyone is currently--knock on wood--healthy), music class, Little Hands, and family and friend time/events, we've had full plates and lots of fun.

Week after week, Ella is the dirtiest baby leaving Little Hands, as she loves to play in the bark, grass, sand, leaves... you name it. I love watching her explore. When our friend Sierra was over this weekend, she said it perfectly. Ella is so thoughtful in her actions. You can see her little wheels turning with everything she does now.

In the last month or so she's had a baby sign language explosion. She signs please, thank you, cracker (can say this, too, over and over again like a parrot), food/eat, drink, milk, water, banana (and a few other fruits), sleep, oatmeal/cereal, hat, baby... we're discovering new things she's signing to us every day it seems like. It's been awesome for her to be able to communicate.

If I could pick Ella's "favorite thing" of the moment, it would be Jackson. She loves to play with him, play near him, wear his harness, lay on his bed, jingle his collar, bring him his toys one by one, use him as a step up to the couch... she's totally into him, and it melts our hearts.

"Ella, give Jackson a kiss"

"Max, give Ella a kiss"

Not sure how it started, but Chris and I call her Ella Bear. It turns out that Ella has a stuffed polar bear that she loves, too. So when I saw this adorable polar bear Halloween costumer online, I thought it'd be perfect. And it was. It was just cool enough outside for her to not overheat in the fur suit. At the Workday "Bring Your Ghouls to Workday" party we did have to take her paws (with claws!) and hat off periodically, though. She had the coziest costume around!

Thank you for my stuffed polar bear, Mrs. Duyn and Mrs. Martin

We went to the Little Hands Halloween Party where I painted faces for the first hour and Ella came with her dad and grandma to play for the second hour. It was fun to show Grandma around!

Auntie Kathleen, Uncle Brad, and Auntie Katelyn all work at Workday and invited us (and Grandma Ellie and Papa Goofy) to their awesome Halloween event. We toured the completely themed-out and transformed cubicles, one floor at a time, tasting treats along the way. Monsters Inc., Vegas and Star Wars were among the themes as pictured below.

We had some family time at the pumpkin patch this Halloween, too!

On Chris's birthday we enjoyed the day with family and friends. We saw Tyler wrestle at San Francisco State, who we hadn't seen since his going away to college; later we had pizza, wine, and cheesecake with our great friends Bob, Lynsey, and Addison, who were in town from Seattle. Addison and Ella are only one week apart, and it was so much fun to see how alike they are! Two sweet peas in a pod :)

Reunited with Uncle Tyler

Here are some fun pictures from a few of our Thursday dates with Grandma.

No fear (for Ella, that is)

Ella LOVES the slide; it's coming close to the joy of the swings...

and apparently black beans?

"What? Do I have something on my face or something?"
Here are some action shots of our thoughtful, playful, and expressive girl. Big hits at our house these days include Ella's red car, the cardboard box house (complete with cut-out windows), Great Papa's baby doll bed, leaves, the castle (mostly because Ella dances to the noise the horses make as they move down the ramp), Jackson's harness, and of course, tupperware.

Bath time continues to be one of our favorite things to do

"Where's your hat, Ella?"
It still fits great this season, Great Grandma Barbi!
We're still on the look out for her first steps. She cruises around the house and walks pretty steadily holding on to one finger, but she's yet to let go. Stay tuned :)

Garber Getaways: Monterey & Phoenix

Pacific Grove, Monterey, Carmel

This year was wedding season for our family.  We attended seven weddings this year, including three out of four weekends in September.  We were especially lucky the last weekend of September when we headed down the coast to our friends Brian and Holly's wedding in Carmel Valley.  Nana and Papa Garber (my / Chris' parents) met us in Pacific Grove for a long weekend so we enjoyed a great weekend at the beach together -- plus, Nana and Papa got to spend some alone time with Ella while we attended the wedding!  We are so lucky and thankful for our amazing family to be willing to travel to see us.

We had a great time in Pacific Grove -- exploring the beach, seeing the lighthouse from a distance (we got there too early due to our Ella driven timeline), and having some amazing dinners out at Il Veccio and the Red House Cafe.  We also spent some great family time together with Nana and Papa once Ella had gone to bed each night -- we stayed up late and had game night / wine tasting out on the patio of our hotel.  It was so much fun to get to spend time with my parents with such beautiful scenery.  And Ella had a blast too -- exploring the Old Fisherman's Wharf, waving at and meeting many strangers, and practicing walking (still holding on to our fingers but getting stronger every day).

Pretty fantastic to have babysitters come so far to have fun weekend!

We had a lot of fun on this balcony :)

Have I mentioned that Rick is a great photographer?
Thank you Papa Rick for taking such wonderful shots of our weekend!

...Especially this photo shoot of our little pumpkin.
Thank you Great Grandma Barbi for the darling pumpkin hat!

Cigars and Port Tasting

Phoenix, Gilbert, Scottsdale

Two weeks after our trip to the Monterey Peninsula, we jumped on a plane for another wedding -- this time for my cousin Kevin's nuptials in Phoenix.  Flying with Ella this time was a bit more challenging now that Ella is so mobile.  We were also delayed getting out of SF so Ella missed two naps.  But, in true Ella fashion, she was pretty much a champ and still managed to smile and wave her way through the flight (Cheerios also helped).

Although we arrived late to Phoenix, we quickly got back on track and had a great pre-wedding party with the Mulvaney family at Great Grand Nana's house.  We had a great time visiting with everyone -- Denver Mulvaney's, Connecticut Mulvaney's, plus Ella's Nana and Papa Garber and Uncle Jeff!  It was great to be together with everyone, and Ella got to show off all her new tricks (see the Tahoe Top 10).  That night set the stage for the whole weekend.

The next day Ella got to spend some one-on-one time with her Great Grand Nana, Uncle Bill, and Auntie Carol, and she loved every minute of it.  She loved exploring the backyard and pointing out all the flowers she wanted her Papa to tell her about.  Ella has developed quite the fondness for my dad -- she loves her whole family, but when he is around she says "Papa, Papa, Papa.." over and over.  I think the feeling is mutual.

Kevin's wedding was that evening, and we had a blast with all the family.  It was a beautiful wedding at the Phoenician hotel, and the bride and groom as well as the rest of the Mulvaney family did an awesome job with wedding duties and speeches.  Ella was a star -- every time we thought she was going to lose steam and go to bed, she got a second wind (more like 10th) and got back into the party.  She spent a lot of time with Uncle Jeff exploring the wedding venue.  But once the band got going, Ella never left the dance floor (neither did the rest of us).  She had a blast dancing with her family and watching the band -- she's making me proud to think she might have music in her genes.  She sure loves to dance!
